A band during a recording session in a studio live room

Instrument recording at Timolabaadvisory is a technical process focused on extracting the full dynamic range of a musical composition. We concentrate on capturing the inherent character of each instrument, from the sharp attack of the drums and the low-end stability of the bass to the harmonic richness of guitars, without introducing unwanted coloration. Located in Chuo-ku, Sapporo, our studio is designed to isolate external noise, making it suitable for everything from delicate acoustic instruments to powerful amplified sounds.

For band recordings, we prioritize the interplay between musicians. Our live room accommodates up to 6 people simultaneously, allowing for visual communication and organic performance. By utilizing large-diaphragm condenser mics and precise acoustic treatment, we secure high-purity sources that provide the necessary flexibility for the subsequent mixing stage. Our approach ensures that the spatial relationship between instruments is preserved while maintaining technical control over the signal.

Recording Workflow

01

Pre-Session Briefing

We review the song structure, instrument list, and desired sonic direction. We request reference tracks to align our technical approach with your vision.

02

Miking & Placement

We execute optimal microphone placement based on instrument characteristics and room acoustics, minimizing bleed while capturing the natural air of the space.

03

The Recording

Engineers monitor levels in real-time to prevent clipping and manage the dynamic range while supporting the musicians through take management.

04

Data Export

Multi-track data is organized and delivered in the specified format. We verify the session files to ensure all takes are correctly labeled and saved.

Who This Service Is For

Our instrument and band recording services are designed for artists and production teams who require "room sound" that cannot be replicated in home studios or small vocal booths. With a total studio area of 120m², we can maintain appropriate distances for high-volume instruments like drums, ensuring the sound does not become muddy or overly compressed by the room.

This service is also suited for those seeking professional level management and tone selection. When a project requires clear source material free from phase issues or unwanted resonances, our equipment and engineering expertise provide the necessary technical foundation. Additionally, we offer a collaborative environment for bands who wish to record as a unit to capture a live ensemble feel, utilizing our capacity for up to 6 simultaneous performers.

Studio Technical Details

Every session begins with a meticulous setup. Led by Chief Engineer Mana Kimura, our staff configures the monitoring environment using near-field monitors, allowing performers to hear a balanced mix that encourages their best performance. During the recording, engineers in the control room constantly monitor waveforms to maximize the dynamic range while ensuring no digital clipping occurs.

In band sessions, we carefully balance separation and cohesion. We use baffle boards and acoustic screens where necessary to control drum bleed into other microphones. This creates multi-track data that allows for flexible volume and EQ adjustments during mixing. To maintain a professional atmosphere, we provide controlled room temperature and scheduled breaks to prevent performer fatigue.

Client Preparation

To ensure an efficient session, we ask clients to prepare the following: a confirmed tempo (BPM) with a click track or guide track. This significantly reduces recording time and facilitates precise editing. We also strongly recommend that all instrument maintenance—such as changing guitar strings or adjusting drum heads—be completed before arriving at the studio.

Furthermore, please provide a "recording sheet" listing the priority of parts to be tracked. Clearly defining which takes are essential and which sections require more focus allows us to work efficiently within the booked time. If you intend to bring specific vintage instruments or high-power amplifiers, please notify us in advance so we can verify power capacity and connection terminals.

Deliverables & Output

Following the session, we deliver data in the following formats: independent multi-track files (stems) for each instrument. Files are provided in industry-standard WAV format (24-bit / 48kHz or 96kHz), with the sampling rate determined by prior consultation. This ensures full compatibility if the data is passed to an external mixing engineer.

Each track is clearly labeled (e.g., Kick_In, Snare_Top, Bass_DI) to facilitate a smooth post-production workflow. Delivery is handled via secure cloud storage or physical media. According to studio rules, raw recording data is kept in our archive for 12 months, providing security in case of accidental data loss by the client.

Timeline & Scheduling

Recording data is typically delivered within 3 business days after the session. While simple exports can be provided on the same day, sessions requiring trimming of unnecessary parts or basic fade processing require a few days for quality control. We manage bookings based on calendar availability.

To secure a date, a 30% deposit is required upon confirmation. Schedule changes are permitted free of charge up to 3 days before the session. Cancellations or changes made after this window are subject to fees as outlined in our terms. This policy ensures we can maintain a fair scheduling system for all our clients in Sapporo.

What Is Not Included

This service is strictly for "recording" (tracking). Consequently, the following are not included: detailed mixing (volume balancing, EQ, compression) and mastering. These are separate professional stages. If you require these services, please book our "Mixing & Mastering" plan separately.

Creative production support, such as songwriting, lyric writing, or arranging, is not part of this plan. We do not provide session musician procurement services. Instruments should generally be brought by the client; however, if you have specific requirements regarding studio-owned gear, please consult us during the briefing phase.

Pricing & Taxation

Our studio rates are based on hourly blocks. All displayed prices include the 10% Japanese consumption tax. For B2B transactions, the payment term is 14 days from the date of invoice. Payments are accepted via bank transfer.

Pricing is calculated based on the total studio occupancy time, including setup and teardown. For example, a one-hour booking must encompass everything from preparation to exit. Overtime is billed in 30-minute increments. We recommend scheduling with a buffer to avoid unexpected costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many microphones are typically used for drum recording?

Depending on the song's direction, we use anywhere from a basic 4-mic setup (kick, snare, and two overheads) to a comprehensive 8-12 mic array including toms and hi-hats. The exact configuration is decided during the pre-session briefing.

Can I bring my own amplifiers?

Yes, you are welcome to bring your own gear. However, as studio power capacity is limited, please inform us of the specifications if you plan to bring multiple large stack amplifiers.

Can the recorded data be edited later?

We handle take selection and basic trimming during the recording phase. However, detailed editing such as pitch correction or timing alignment is part of the mixing process and requires a separate mixing plan.

Can individuals under 16 use the studio?

According to studio rules, individuals under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. This ensures a safe and professional environment for all users.
